Cannabis in Minnesota

Prairie Island’s New Cannabis Dispensary Coming This Summer

Get Ready for Some Grass on the Prairie! We’ve got some buzzy news for you out of Red Wing.

The Prairie Island Indian Community is firing up a brand new cannabis dispensary called Island Peži (pay-zhee) meaning “grass” in the Dakota language.

This new tribal cannabis venture is setting up shop right next door to the Treasure Island Resort & Casino, attached to the Dakota Station convenience mart.

The grand opening is slated for sometime this summer, bringing legal weed closer than ever to the Twin Cities metro area!

So what’s the deal with Island Peži?

According to Tribal Council President Grant Johnson, it’s all about that economic diversification:

“Island Peži allows us to branch out into new businesses, strengthening our Tribe’s self-governance and long-term financial prosperity. We’re stoked to be trailblazers in Minnesota’s cannabis market and create fresh opportunities for our people.”

While places like Red Lake Nation and White Earth Nation were the first to spark up dispensaries on their lands after Minnesota legalized adult-use last year, Island Peži will be leading the way down in southern Minnesota.

And get this – until the state’s legal recreational market gets fully lit in early 2025, it’ll be the closest place for Twin Cities locals to buy some bud! Only 90 Minutes away.

Of course, as a sovereign nation, the Prairie Island Indian Community has set up their own regulatory commission to handle licensing and oversight of all cannabis operations on their territory. No need to wait on the state’s Office of Cannabis Management to pass out licenses.

The Tribe’s business arm CBH Inc. will be running the show at Island Peži, so you know they’re taking this seriously as a major economic venture.

Once those dispensary doors open this summer, it’ll be a historic first for legal cannabis in the Red Wing area.

So get ready to make a road trip down to Island Peži! Whether you’re looking for some flower, edibles, concentrates or just to explore the exciting new world of regional cannabis tourism, there will be a fresh grass spot blooming on the prairie.
