If you ever drive up to the north shore, past Gooseberry Falls is a stunning town of Silver Bay. With plenty of outdoor adventure, great restaurants and family fun, you will have a great time.

For outdoor adventurers, the Silver Bay area is a paradise. Take a hike or bike ride to explore the North Shore State Trail or the Superior Hiking Trail.

At first glance, it’s just a stoplight along Highway 61. But once you make a turn, you’ll find there is so much more. From Black Beach to Scenic Overlook. To the best camping and hiking.

I keep finding new reasons to explore.

Best Things to do in Silver Bay MN

Silver Bay Marina

If you have a boat, Silver Bay Marina is a great stop. The amenities they offer are truly exceptional. Boaters can choose from a variety of slips. The marina also provides ample parking for any size boat and trailer. Plus a great boat launch.

The harbor has a depth of anywhere from 8 feet to 30 feet. Each slip comes with 30 or 50 amp power, fresh water and a private bathroom.

If you don’t have a boat, there are different scenic cruises and fishing charters that leave from the marina. Check out Wenonah for a great lake cruise, or Lake Taker Charter for some great fishing.

Pellet Island

The Pellet Island at the Silver Bay Marina in Minnesota is a great place to see the North Shore. This island located just off the shore of Lake Superior.

The island is accessible by boat, or by a short walk on the rocky breakwater. A visit to this island is sure to be a memorable experience.

To get there, park at Marina’s visitor space and take the walkway down. You’ll pass by plenty of people fishing off the breakwater.

This island is stunning and just as much of an adventure to get there.

Tettegouche State Park

Tettegouche State Park is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the entire state. With its picturesque waterfalls, pristine lakes, rugged cliffs, and miles of trails, it’s truly a paradise.

The park has some of the best hiking trails in the state.

In addition to hiking you can camp, fish, mountain bike, boat, kayak, and more.

The Park is open from 8 am – 10 pm, so spend a day exploring.

Shovel Point

Shovel Point at Tettegouche State Park in Northern Minnesota is a spectacular stop. Shovel Point is a long, narrow peninsula that extends over two miles into the lake.

The site has different geological formations like broken bedrock, big rocks, and various sandstone cliffs.

You can explore the area by hiking, kayaking or even climbing.

The breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding area, along with the rugged terrain, make Shovel Point a memorable adventure.

The site also has a variety of wildlife, including bald eagles, falcons, and other raptors.

Shovel Point is one of the most popular destinations in Tettegouche State Park.

Since the park is a roadside stop, you can access the visitor center and the hiking trail to Shovel point without needing a State Park Pass.

Palisade Heads

Palisades Head is a spectacular overlook in the northwest corner of Minnesota.

The formation towers majestically above the breathtaking Lake Superior. 

It has one of the most breathtaking views of the lake. Trust me on this!

The formation consists of cliffs and rock formations that have been eroded into various shapes, creating a unique geological landscape.

To get there, take the overlook turn off, just south of the main entrance to Tetteguche State Park. If you have a trailer, or an oversized vehicle, park at the bottom lot and hike the road up. Otherwise, drive up to the top as there is always plenty of parking.

For those looking for a bit of adventure, there are also opportunities for rock climbing and rappelling. Visiting Palisades Head offers unforgettable outdoor activities.

Silver Bay Overlook

The Silver Bay Scenic Overlook hike is a beautiful hike along Minnesota’s North Shore.

This trail takes you along the shore of Lake Superior, offering breathtaking views of the Sawtooth Mountains and the lake.

The overlook is a great place to see the seasons change. The beautiful autumn foliage is especially stunning.

The trail is easy, covering just under a mile, looping back to the parking lot. The terrain is mostly flat. The trailhead is located off Highway 61, near Silver Bay.

At the end of the trail, you’ll reach the Silver Bay Scenic Overlook. Here, you’ll have a breathtaking view of Lake Superior and the surrounding hills.

The overlook is the perfect place to take a break, enjoy the scenery, and snap some photos of the lake and its shoreline.

North Shore Adventure Park

The North Shore Adventure Park in Silver Bay, MN is a family favorite. The adventure park has zip lines and challenge ropes designed to thrill and test your skills, no matter what skill level you are at.

North Shore Adventure Park is a high ropes course in Silver Bay on Highway 61. They have 6 different courses for all skill levels with 10 zip lines.

You’ll purchase a 2-hour block of time to enjoy the aerial courses, covering as many ropes as you can.

This is a great place to build confidence and challenge yourself like never before. I highly recommend stopping in for family fun.

Split Rock Lighthouse

Split Rock Lighthouse in Silver Bay, Minnesota is a must-see landmark in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

This stunning structure has been guiding boats through the treacherous waters of Lake Superior for over one hundred years.

The lighthouse was constructed in 1910. It stands on a 120-foot-tall rock on the eastern shore of the lake. Its purpose is to guide ships safely through the area.

Split Rock Lighthouse has a long and storied history attached to its name. In 1905, a strong storm hit the area, causing over 50 sailors to lose their lives when more than two dozen vessels sunk in Lake Superior.

In response to this tragedy, the lighthouse was constructed. Since its completion, the historic lighthouse has provided a safe passage for sailors and ships in the area.

Today, visitors can explore the rocky shore of Split Rock Lighthouse, as well as its surrounding buildings and grounds. Tourists can climb the 120-foot tower to enjoy the stunning views of Lake Superior and the surrounding area.

Split Rock Lighthouse is an important part of Minnesota’s maritime history and symbolizes the strong bond between the state and Lake Superior.

Black Beach

Black Beach, also known as Onyx Beach, is a stunning spot in Silver Bay, MN that attracts beach enthusiasts, families, and adventurers.

This beach on the north shore of Lake Superior has a stunning view and easy lake access.

With its soft black sand beach, crystal clear waters, and stunning sunrises, Black Beach is amazing. This is the only place on the shore where you’ll find black sand, from the Taconite mined in the area.

From the beach, visitors can take in the breathtaking views of the lake, as well as explore the rocky shoreline and beach.

The beach is easily accessible. Plus there is plenty of space for activities. There are also picnic areas and grills available.

Make sure to take the road south as far as you can go to the second Black Beach marker. While the first stop is pretty, the second stop is out of this world!

Rocky Taconite

The Rocky Taconite Statue in Silver Bay, Minnesota represents the strength and determination of the people of the Iron Range.

For years, the Iron Range has been home to hardworking people who have extracted valuable minerals from the land in the mining industry.

The Rocky Taconite Statue reminds people of the sacrifices and pride of the workers.

A tall statue was made in 1993 and placed near Lake Superior, overlooking Silver Bay. The statue was created by artist Edwin Hamilton and is made of Taconite.

The Iron Range is the world’s biggest taconite-producing area, making over half of the Taconite used for making steel in the United States.

You can learn about the history of the Iron Range and its miners by visiting the statue in Silver Bay.

Bean & Bear Lake

Bean and Bear Lake Hike in Silver Bay MN is an exciting and scenic hike that is perfect for a day trip or a weekend getaway.

Located just outside of Silver Bay, this hike is well-traveled by Minnesotans. With its gorgeous views and varied terrain, this hike is sure to please everyone.

The hike is a 6.6 mile loop up some strenuous hills. At the peak, you’ll be rewarded with a view of Bear Lake. Behind it lies the significantly smaller Bean Lake. Known to the locals as Bean and Bear.

The trail then loops around and descends to the shore of Lake Superior. The Bean and Bear Lake Hike in Silver Bay MN is definitely worth a visit.

Gitchi Gami State Trail

The Gitchi-Gami State Trail is a scenic trail that runs along the Lake Superior shoreline in Minnesota. The trail spans over 86 miles from Two Harbors to Grand Marais, passing through several charming towns and parks along the way.

Some of the popular attractions along the trail include Gooseberry Falls State Park. You will also see the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, with stunning views of Lake Superior and the iconic lighthouse.

What is my favorite thing to do in Silver Bay MN?

When it comes to Silver Bay, it’s all about being outdoors. My family and I absolutely loved going to the North Shore Adventure Park while we were there. Tetteguche is one of the MN State Parks I can’t get enough of. I highly recommend stopping.

If you are short on time, my top recommendation is to do the Silver Bay Overlook Trail. Visit Palisade Head and make a short trip to Tettegouche State Park to see the beautiful Baptism River. You can do it all in about an hour!

Silver bay is the best place for a stop while taking one of your scenic drives. With it being just a short drive from Duluth, you will fall in love. There are so many must-see stops you’ll love.
