360 Chicago Observation Deck: Is This Sky-High Experience Worth Your Time?

Looking for the best views of Chicago? I recently visited 360 Chicago (formerly the John Hancock Observatory), and I’m here to tell you everything you need to know about this sky-high adventure.

From breathtaking views to tilting thrills, let’s break down what makes this observation deck special and whether it’s worth adding to your Chicago itinerary.

What’s All the Hype About?

Perched 1,000 feet above the Magnificent Mile on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Center, 360 Chicago offers more than just your standard observation deck experience. You get a 360 degree window view of the entire city, including Lake Michigan, Michigan Avenue, Lincoln park and more.

The star of the show? TILT – an engineering marvel that quite literally tilts you out over the city at a 30-degree angle. Yes, you read that right – you’ll be leaning out over Michigan Avenue with nothing but reinforced glass between you and the street below!

They also have a CloudDeck, allowing you to get views of the city without being interrupted by glass. They also have a bar where you can get a cocktail or drink or even get a bite in their cafe.

The Views That Make It Worth It

Let me tell you, the panoramic views are absolutely spectacular. On a clear day, you can see the endless blue expanse of Lake Michigan stretching to the horizon.

Chicago’s stunning architectural skyline in all its glory, Navy Pier and the winding Chicago River. If your eyes are really good, you can make out four different states (Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan) if you know where to look.

What to expect at the 360 Chicago

You’ll start off by entering at the ground level of the John Handcock Center. You’ll see a sign pointing you to the 360 Chicago Observation Deck. There you’ll be able to purchase tickets and start your journey. Tickets can also be purchased in advance if you want to skip the ticket desk. We didn’t have any line when we went.

After getting your tickets you’ll be escorted back to a waiting area. Again, no real line when we were there. Spend as much time as you want to explore the history before you get to the elevator.

Once it’s your time ride, it’s a straight shot directly to the top. We felt our ears pop on the way up. Then you’ll get free reign at the top. Everything was open to explore.

Insider Tips for the Perfect Visit

Timing Is Everything

Here’s what I learned to make the most of your experience:

  • Plan your visit for sunset to get two completely different views for the price of one
  • Early mornings typically have the smallest crowds
  • Weekdays are significantly less busy than weekends
  • Allow 1 hour to fully enjoy the experience

Money-Saving Strategies

  • Basic admission runs about $25 for adults
  • TILT costs an extra $8
  • Look for combo tickets with other attractions
  • Consider the Sun & Stars pass (around $40) if you want to visit twice within 48 hours
  • Check tourist passes like CityPASS for better deals

Make It Worth Your While

  • Download the 360 Chicago app before your visit
  • Don’t skip Bar 94 cafe and bar – even if you’re not drinking, the seating areas offer one-of-a-kind views
  • Bring your camera, but don’t forget to just soak in the experience
  • Use the interactive screens to identify landmarks you’re seeing
  • Don’t forget to check out the gift shop for your iconic Chicago merch.

The TILT Experience: Should You Do It?

The TILT experience is an extra $8. I’ve been told the sensation of tilting out over the city is unique. The TILT Experience was having some maintenance on it when we were there. If you do think you want to do it, make sure you are ok with heights. My daughter got dizzy being up that high and normally doesn’t have an issue with that kind of thing.

My biggest complaint about the tower was that they instead of saying the TILT was CLOSED or Under Repair, they decided to say SOLD OUT when buying combo tickets. Only after asking did, we find out that it would be closed for two weeks. But people all around us were seeing the sign and decided to come back tomorrow.

If this is a decision factor between the Sky Deck and the Willis Tower (aka Sears Tower), make sure to call ahead.

The CloudWalk: Yes or No?

Want to feel what gave Chicago its nickname the Windy City? Step out onto the Cloud Deck, an open-air section that takes the observation deck experience to a whole new level.

The protective screen panels keep you safe while still allowing you to experience Chicago’s famous gusts. Even on calm days, there’s usually enough of a breeze up here to make you feel like you’re truly on top of the world.

How Does It Compare to Willis Tower?

The age-old Chicago question: 360 Chicago or Willis Tower’s Skydeck? Here’s my take:

360 Chicago wins for:

  • Generally shorter wait times
  • Better views of Lake Michigan
  • The unique TILT experience
  • A less touristy vibe according to the locals.
  • Located on the North end of the Merical Mile, making it easy to get to

Willis Tower offers:

  • Slightly higher elevation
  • The famous Ledge experience
  • More historic significance
  • Located on the Chicago River

When to Skip It

While I loved my visit, 360 Chicago might not be worth it if:

The weather is foggy or visibility is poor, for obvious reasons

You’re on a very tight budget. You may not even be on a tight budget, but don’t place that kind of value the view.

You have a serious fear of heights. My daughter didn’t realize it at the time, but as soon as she got up there, she didn’t want to be anywhere near the edge.

You’ve recently done Willis Tower and aren’t interested in TILT. While they are different views, they are relatively the same thing.

The 360 Chicago Bottom Line

Is 360 Chicago worth your time and money? Absolutely – if you time it right. The combination of breathtaking views, and the chance to see Chicago from a totally different perspective makes it a worthy addition to your itinerary. Just be sure to check the weather forecast and try to visit on a clear day – it makes all the difference in the world!

Pro Tip: For the best experience, arrive about an hour before sunset. You’ll get to see the city in daylight, watch the sun go down, and then witness Chicago transform into a glittering wonderland of lights – all in one visit!
