Is 360 Chicago Worth It? Let’s take a look

Looking for the best views of Chicago? I recently visited 360 Chicago (formerly the John Hancock Observatory), and I’m here to tell you everything you need to know about this sky-high adventure.

From breathtaking views to tilting thrills, let’s break down what makes this observation deck special and whether it’s worth adding to your Chicago itinerary.

What’s All the Hype About?

Perched 1,000 feet above the Magnificent Mile on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Center, 360 Chicago offers more than just your standard observation deck experience. You get a 360 degree window view of the entire city, including Lake Michigan, Michigan Avenue, Lincoln Park and more.

The star of the show? TILT, an engineering marvel that quite literally tilts you out over the city at a 30-degree angle. Yes, you read that right. You’ll be leaning out over Michigan Avenue with nothing but reinforced glass between you and the street below.

They also have a CloudDeck, allowing you to get views of the city without being interrupted by glass. They also have a bar where you can get a cocktail or drink, or even grab a bite in their cafe.

The Views That Make It Worth It

Let me tell you, the panoramic views are absolutely spectacular. On a clear day, you can see the endless blue expanse of Lake Michigan stretching to the horizon.

You also get Chicago’s stunning architectural skyline in all its glory, plus Navy Pier and the winding Chicago River. If your eyes are really good, you can make out four different states (Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan) if you know where to look.

What to expect at the 360 Chicago

You’ll start off by entering at the ground level of the John Hancock Center. You’ll see a sign pointing you to the 360 Chicago Observation Deck. There you’ll be able to purchase tickets and start your journey. Tickets can also be purchased in advance if you want to skip the ticket desk. We didn’t have any line when we went.

After getting your tickets you’ll be escorted back to a waiting area. Again, no real line when we were there. Spend as much time as you want to explore the history before you get to the elevator.

Once it’s your time ride, it’s a straight shot directly to the top. We felt our ears pop on the way up. Then you’ll get free reign at the top. Everything was open to explore.

Insider Tips for the Perfect Visit

Timing Is Everything

Timing makes a big difference here. If you can, plan your visit around sunset so you get two totally different views in one trip (daylight and nighttime lights). Early mornings usually have the smallest crowds, and weekdays are significantly less busy than weekends. Most people will be happy with about an hour on the observation deck, especially if you’re not planning to linger at the bar.

Money-Saving Strategies

Basic admission runs about $30 for adults, and TILT costs extra (often listed around $10). If you want to stretch your dollars, look for combo tickets with other attractions, and consider the Sun & Stars pass (often around $45) if you want to visit twice within 48 hours. Tourist passes like CityPASS can also be a better deal if you’re doing multiple stops in the city.

Make It Worth Your While

Before you go, download the 360 Chicago app so you can use the interactive info while you’re up there. Don’t skip Bar 94 cafe and bar, even if you’re not drinking, because the seating areas have one-of-a-kind views. Bring your camera, but also give yourself a few minutes to just soak it all in. The interactive screens are also great for identifying landmarks, and the gift shop is a fun place to grab classic Chicago merch on your way out.

The TILT Experience: Should You Do It?

The TILT experience is an extra $8. I’ve been told the sensation of tilting out over the city is unique. If you do think you want to do it, make sure you are ok with heights. My daughter got dizzy being up that high and normally doesn’t have an issue with that kind of thing.

If this is a decision factor between the Skydeck and the Willis Tower (aka Sears Tower), make sure to call ahead.

The Skywalk: Yes or No?

Want to feel what gave Chicago its nickname the Windy City? Step out onto the Skywalk, an open-air section that takes the observation deck experience to a whole new level.

The protective screen panels keep you safe while still allowing you to experience Chicago’s famous gusts. Even on calm days, there’s usually enough of a breeze up here to make you feel like you’re truly on top of the world.

How Does It Compare to Willis Tower?

The age-old Chicago question: 360 Chicago or Willis Tower’s Skydeck? Here’s my take. 360 Chicago wins if you want generally shorter wait times, better views of Lake Michigan, and the unique TILT experience. It also tends to feel a little less touristy, and it’s located on the north end of the Magnificent Mile, which makes it easy to pair with shopping or a nice dinner.

Willis Tower offers a slightly higher elevation, the famous Ledge experience, and more historic significance. It’s also located closer to the Chicago River area, which can be convenient depending on what else you’re doing that day.

When to Skip It

While I loved my visit, 360 Chicago might not be worth it if the weather is foggy or visibility is poor (for obvious reasons). You might also want to skip it if you’re on a very tight budget, or if you just don’t place that kind of value on the view. And if you have a serious fear of heights, be honest with yourself, because being up that high can feel intense once you’re at the windows. Finally, if you recently did Willis Tower and you’re not interested in TILT, this may feel too similar to justify the cost.

The 360 Chicago Bottom Line

Is 360 Chicago worth your time and money? Absolutely, if you time it right. The combination of breathtaking views, and the chance to see Chicago from a totally different perspective makes it a worthy addition to your itinerary. Just be sure to check the weather forecast and try to visit on a clear day, it makes all the difference in the world.

Pro Tip: For the best experience, arrive about an hour before sunset. You’ll get to see the city in daylight, watch the sun go down, and then witness Chicago transform into a glittering wonderland of lights, all in one visit.
