Date Night at Kiwanis Holiday Lights
It’s hard to believe Christmas is almost here. Every year I make a holiday bucket list, and every year a few things don’t happen. This time, I was set on soaking up the lights.
My inner Clark Griswold came out, and Kiwanis Holiday Lights was the place to go.
Our de-light-ful trip was a last‑minute plan. I talked my husband into a holiday lights tour, but since it was the weekend before Christmas, we had already missed a few festivals.
We decided on the Kiwanis Holiday Lights at Sibley Park in Mankato, MN.

The Kiwanis Holiday Lights
With hot cocoa in hand, we headed to Sibley Park. The display typically runs nightly from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm during the season (check the website for this year’s exact dates and hours).
Friends told us to arrive at opening to avoid the rush, and that was solid advice. If you’re planning a date night, getting there near sunset is lovely. Parking is on site; allow extra time on peak nights.
Once you arrive, you can walk through the park for a closer look at the lights, or drive the loop.
Do both if you can. Dress warm, wear comfy shoes, and bring phone-friendly gloves so you can take photos without freezing your fingers.
Admission is free. Donations of cash or non-perishable food are encouraged and support local nonprofits.
As you enter, you’ll see animated lights synced to music. If you drive the loop, tune your radio to the posted station for the soundtrack.
The walking path is lined with trees decorated by community groups and local businesses. It’s a fun way to feel Mankato’s community pride.
Activities to enjoy
- Concessions in warming areas (hot cocoa, cider, water, soda, and simple snacks). Bring small bills; some stands may be cash-only.
- Horse-drawn wagon rides offered on select nights; small fee per person. Check the schedule.
- Skating on synthetic ice on select nights; bring your own skates.
- Visit with Santa and see live reindeer on scheduled dates. Check availability online.
- Ice carving demos appear on limited dates; watch the calendar for times.

The lights did not disappoint. The event has grown a lot over the years and remains a local favorite.
We found a new holiday tradition. It’s great for all ages. If you’re bringing little ones, layer up and bring blankets or a stroller wagon with a cozy cover.
What I loved most was stepping out of the holiday chaos, breathing in the crisp air, and soaking up the magic of the season.
Christmas lights make me feel like I’m eight years old again, and there’s a reason we call it the most wonderful time of year.
May your days be merry and bright!
