Things to do on your way to your cabin, Gordy's Hi Hat

Gordy’s Hi Hat – A Minnesota Tradition

Last updated on August 4th, 2019

Any trip to Duluth would not be complete without stopping for Malts and Burgers at Gordy’s Hi-Hat. Located off Highway 33, it is your gateway to North Country. It was my husband that turned me on to Gordy’s. He described it as the original greasy spoon. Gordy’s is made famous by the fresh hand-patties hamburgers and their home-made onion rings. Driving by, I knew I was in for something special. The outside was jam-packed with cars. There was an excited hum by the people lined up outside the restaurant just to put their order in.

The owners, Gordy and Marilyn Lindquist first opened an A&W Root Beer Stand. A short 10 years later they decided to create their own restaurant. Gordy’s Hi-Hat opened in Coquet. It is now in its 56th season. Gordy’s Hi-Hat has been featured on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives.

Gordy’s Hi-Hat

Don’t let the line deter you. The trained staff can get the orders out pretty fast. Most days, you will see Gordy himself taking orders. You will not see a cash register up front either. All orders are taken on his pad of paper and filled before you even pay. Their seating wraps all around the restaurant.

They pride themselves in doing everything the old fashion way. From Burgers to Onion Rings, they have it all. I personally recommend getting one of their Shakes! Gordy’s Hi-Hat is a seasonal business opened Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Off Season

If you happen to be in the offseason and are still itching for some delicious treats, check out the ‘Warming House Coffee & Creamery’. Owned and operated by the Lindquist Family, it is open year round and serves the same Chili and the Shakes.

Self-proclaimed foodies and umm healthy eaters should probably keep on driving.
